3D 4D ultrasound is becoming a popular bonding activity for expecting Mothers.  3D 4D ultrasound works by creating a live animation of the baby in utero showing incredible facial details and life-like actions such as waving, blinking, smiling, and kicking.  Through 3D 4D ultrasound technology mothers can form a once in a lifetime bond with their unborn baby and keep the images to show their child when they're grown up.  Several mothers comment on the striking similarity between the 3D 4D ultrasound pictures and the baby when he or she is born.

3D 4D ultrasound debate, ethics, and controversy

Despite the bonding and wellness benefits shown to arise from 3d 4d ultrasound use the area has created controversy in the Medical Community.  It's believedt that 3D 4D ultrasound is unethical use of diagnostic medical equipment and that it should be reserved for medical purposes only.  Others suggest that there may be an unknown risk to 3D 4D ultrasound that has yet to be discovered.  Many counter this argument since ultrasound has been used safely in the fields of Obstetrics, Family Medicine, and Radiology for over 50 years.

3D 4D Ultrasound ethics in gender selection

Gender assessment with 3D 4D ultrasound is a pressing concern because it may lead to gender selection practices which undermine the value of the service and is by nature unethical.  Many 3D 4D ultrasound centers therefore impose no gender assessment rules prior to 16 weeks gestation.

3D 4D Ultrasound Anomalies

Identifying an anomaly with 3D 4D ultasound is another issue of controversy.  3D 4D ultrasound centers claim to be nondiagnostic so an issue arises when an anomaly is identified by the tech.  Are they supposed to refer the patient to the clinic or send them home with images of the anomaly to cherish.  Although the former option may appear more ethical on the surface issues arise when a referral is made because the scan is now by definition 'diagnostic'.
